How Northwich Baths changes my life forever.

I moved to Winsford from Liverpool at the age of 6 years. I learnt to swim at the outdoor baths at Winsford as that was the only pool available at the time. My family spent many long summer days at the outdoor baths we would take a picnic and stay the whole day. At the age of 8 years I went to Northwich baths for the first time with my primary school for a once weekly swimming lesson. My friends and I would catch the bus from Winsford to Northwich on a saturday and go for a swim, we would always call at Seafarer for a bag of chips to enjoy on the journey home. The diving boards at Northwich were the first I jumped off, only because my friend said if I didn't jump she would push me. Once the new indoor pool at Winsford opened my time was spent between the two Winsford pools and Northwich was a bystander. I joined Winsford Swimming Club and when I was 13 years old did the life saving awards. The day after my 16th birthday I was employed by Vale Royal Borough Council as a part time pool attendant based at both Winsford Pools. In November 1977 a full time position became available at Northwich Baths so I applied and got the job. I started work mid november on my first encounter with the swimming club I was introduced to Jack, He took me round to all the coaches on duty that evening, all except one. I asked Jack "who is the lad teaching in the little pool?" his answer was "Oh thats my son Colin" he then introduced me. Little did I know at that time that we would be married just less that 3 years later. I have fond memories of my time working at the baths. Friday nights were the best a lot of club coaches and members would go for a swim, it was like one big family night out. Northwich club was like an extended family, in those early days we would do lots fundraising, jumble sales were popular at this time, the fundraising I enjoyed the most was the Bingo Evenings, we would have donated prizes and everyone would go round to Alma's house, we all took bits of food and had a feast. I have built up some great friendships with the club members over the years and wonder how my life would have changed had I not got the Job at Northwich Baths, and had not been introduced to my husband and best friend Colin.
